Sub-Saharan Africa Growth Forecast Raised to 4.3% for 2026, World Bank Says

Sub-Saharan Africa growth 2026

Sub-Saharan Africa’s economy is projected to grow 4.3% in 2026, up from 4.1% in 2025 and 0.3 percentage points above the April forecast, according to the World Bank’s Africa Economic Update released on 6 October 2026. The Bank warns that growth is still not creating enough jobs for a fast-growing workforce.

The details

The report describes economic activity as resilient despite geopolitical tensions, climate shocks, falling development assistance and fiscal pressure. Public debt has broadly stabilized at around 57% of GDP, but high debt-service costs still squeeze spending on health, education and infrastructure, the World Bank says.

  • Growth: 4.1% in 2025, 4.3% projected for 2026.
  • Inflation: median inflation is projected to rise from 3.7% in 2025 to 5.5% in 2026, driven by fuel, fertilizer and food prices.
  • Risks: conflict in the Middle East, possible El Niño effects and tighter financing conditions.
  • Special focus: how AI can raise productivity and create jobs. Adoption is early and concentrated in Kenya, Nigeria and South Africa.

“The next challenge is turning growth into more jobs and better opportunities,” said Andrew Dabalen, the World Bank’s Chief Economist for the Africa Region, in the release.

Why it matters for social enterprises and funders in Africa

Higher growth on paper does not mean easier conditions on the ground. Rising food and fuel prices hit the low-income customers that many social enterprises serve, and debt service limits what governments can spend on the services NGOs often fill in for.

  • Social enterprises: plan for higher input costs in 2026 and test pricing with customers before inflation forces the decision.
  • Funders: jobs are the stated gap. Programs and ventures that can show employment created, not only people reached, align with where policy attention is moving.
  • Tech for good: the Bank favours affordable, locally adapted “small AI”. Ventures building simple tools for farmers, clinics and small shops fit that framing.

What’s next

The Africa Economic Update is published twice a year. The next edition is expected in spring 2027. Readers should watch whether the inflation forecast holds, since it depends heavily on energy and food prices.
