The Global Impact Investing Network (GIIN) published an Impact Investing Messaging Playbook on 23 September 2026. It gives investors shared core messages and practical guidance for describing impact investing consistently, as the field faces growing scrutiny and blurred lines with related approaches.
The details
The GIIN says impact investing has grown into a market with “trillions of dollars in motion”, but that language often gets lost between the boardroom, the newsroom and the public. That makes the work harder to understand and scale, and leaves members exposed when the field is criticized, according to the GIIN.
- What it contains: core messages, sector-specific language and guidance on adapting communications.
- Who it is for: limited partners, general partners, investees, prospective hires, media and the public.
- How it was built: developed by the GIIN with support from the Soros Economic Development Fund, shaped over more than a year by its Investors’ Council Impact Narrative Taskforce.
- Scope: it covers communication only and is not intended to influence members’ investment decisions.
Why the GIIN playbook matters for impact organizations
The playbook arrives as the GIIN’s own data points to a credibility problem. In its State of the Market 2025, 62% of investors named impact washing as the top industry challenge, and 67% reported ESG backlash as a challenge.
- Fund managers in emerging markets: consistent language helps explain to international LPs why a strategy is impact investing and not only ESG screening.
- Investees and social enterprises: knowing the vocabulary investors are being encouraged to use makes pitches and reports easier to align.
- Communicators: clearer, shared terms reduce the risk of overclaiming in reports and campaigns.
Our position is the same one Impact DOTS applies to its own coverage: a message is only as strong as the evidence behind it.
What’s next
The playbook is available on the GIIN website. As of 27 October 2026, no follow-up edition appears on the GIIN’s research page. Organizations can use it now alongside their own impact measurement frameworks.
