Impact investors are far more satisfied with the impact their portfolios deliver than with financial returns: 90% of respondents to the Global Impact Investing Network’s State of the Market 2025 were satisfied with impact performance, against 72% for financial performance. Impact assets under management grew at a 21% compound annual rate over six years.
The report surveyed 429 organizations across 54 countries. It is the GIIN’s main annual read on how impact investors allocate, perform and plan.

The State of the Market is part of the GIIN’s Market Intelligence Series and draws on its annual Impact Investor Survey. Respondents self-report, so the data describes the investors who answered rather than the whole market.
Key findings
- Impact AUM grew at a 21% compound annual rate over six years, compared with 5% for respondents’ total AUM, according to the GIIN State of the Market 2025.
- Respondents reported $448.2 billion in impact AUM including outliers, and impact assets made up 3% of the $13.1 trillion total AUM of the 368 respondents that reported 2024 data, the report finds.
- 90% of investors were satisfied with impact performance and 72% with financial performance, and half were very satisfied with impact compared with about a quarter on financial returns, according to the GIIN.
- Over the next five years, 56% of investors plan to increase allocations to energy, 48% to agriculture and forestry, 37% to healthcare and 36% to water, sanitation and hygiene, the State of the Market 2025 shows.
- By geography, 32% plan to increase allocations to Western Africa, 31% to Eastern Africa and Southeastern Asia, and 30% to Southern Africa, while 70% of impact AUM is currently in high-income regions, according to the report.
- Impact washing is the top industry-level challenge, cited by 62% of investors, yet only 10% see it as a challenge for their own organization, the GIIN reports.
- Data quality is a challenge for 93% of investors, with cost (26%) and time (24%) the most significant data constraints, according to the State of the Market 2025.
What the GIIN State of the Market 2025 means for ventures and funds in Africa, MENA and Southeast Asia
Two numbers sit uncomfortably together. Investors say they plan to grow in Africa and Southeast Asia, but 70% of impact assets are still in high-income regions. Intention has not yet become allocation, and the gap is a pitch opportunity.
- For founders and fund managers raising capital: energy, agriculture, health and water lead allocation plans. Ventures in those sectors in Western, Eastern or Southern Africa match stated intent. Lead with that alignment.
- Impact washing is seen as someone else’s problem. 62% see it in the industry, 10% in themselves. Organizations that can show verified, standardized impact data will stand out to investors who are worried about credibility.
- Data is the bottleneck. With 93% of investors struggling with data quality, investees who report against recognized indicators reduce their funders’ costs and become easier to back again.
- MENA has to make its own case. MENA does not appear among the regions with the highest planned increases, which are in Africa, Southeast Asia and South America. Funds and ventures in the region need to argue the regional opportunity explicitly.
